The Psychology of Color

The use of color is indeed part personal preference. However, the truth is, color affects people physically, emotionally and psychologically. When you're planning your color scheme for your space, it may help you to know the effects of some of the colors you choose.

BLUE - calming effect - creates a feeling of tranquility, partially caused by the body producing naturally tranquilizing chemicals which relax and refresh. Using to much blue can make a room cold.

RED - heart rate increases - large doses cause blood pressure to rise and breathing can become more rapid. Bright reds are best used in accessories, paintings, a single chair or pillows.

GREEN - balancing and normalizing - the feel of nature, refreshing. Green is considered a neutral and blends easily with other colors. Green garnish compliments most food colors, the same is true of green when used in interiors. Dark green has been associated with success.

YELLOW - warm and cheerful -drawing attention, however, prolonged exposure of intense yellow can cause anxiety.

WHITE - purity and cleanliness - void of color - mixes well with all colors, white gives small spaces a much larger feel. The use of bright white paint on ceilings and interior trims opens spaces that lack natural lighting and corrects low ceilings.

BLACK - lack of hope and therefore depresses - mixture of all colors, however, black used in moderation lends an air of sophistication and openness.
